<h1 style="background: none; border: 0px; color: #9c3041; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 28px; margin: 0px 0px 10px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">
The Logic Behind “-logic” and “-logical”</h1>
<span class="author" style="background: none; border: 0px; color: #989a9a; display: block; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 14px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">By Mark Nichol</span></div>
<div style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #2c3e50; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">
Why does the English language allow one to select between, say, <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">biologic</em> and <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">biological</em>, <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">neurologic</em> and <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">neurological</em>, and <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">technologic</em> and <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">technological</em>? Why complicate our language lives with the choice? Is the universe malicious?</div>
<div style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #2c3e50; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">
According to one study, the suffix <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-ic</em> is preferred over the variant <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-ical</em> by a ratio of 8 to 1. Curiously, however, when <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-log</em> precedes the suffix, the ratio is reversed. (In another example of this phenomenon, called potentiation, <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-ness</em> is much more common than <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-ity </em>— except when the suffix is preceded by –<em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">able</em>.) But that doesn’t answer my questions.</div>
<div style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #2c3e50; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">
For the most part, the choice seems to be personal or institutional preference, because there’s usually no distinction — no logic, for example, to selection of <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-logic</em> or <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-logical</em>. For example, the style guide of the American Academy of Neurology prefers the shorter form, but in other contexts, <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">neurological </em>prevails.</div>
<div style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #2c3e50; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">
One researcher points out that, as you might have guessed, <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-ic</em> (from the Greek suffix <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-ikos</em>) was the original suffix; <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-ical</em>, formed by adding the French suffix <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-al</em>, came later. For the most part, usage organically caused a divergence, so that, for example, a historic occasion is memorable, whereas a historical occasion is one that merely occurred.</div>
<div style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #2c3e50; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">
For another example, <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">economic</em> refers to economics, while <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">economical</em> is used more generally to refer to the quality of economy. In this case, as with some others, the former can mean the same thing as the latter but seldom does. <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">Comic</em> and <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">comical</em>, and <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">geometric</em> and <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">geometrical</em>, are two of the many other sister terms with both (occasionally) identical and (usually) distinctly different meanings.</div>
<div style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #2c3e50; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">
Sometimes, one form predominates for obvious reasons (<em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">fanatical</em>, for example, developed in favor of <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">fanatic</em> because the original form came to be applied as a noun), but in other cases, the variation — for reasons seldom clear — triumphs (<em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">botanical</em> versus <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">botanic</em>, for example.)</div>
<div style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #2c3e50; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">
So, which form should you use in a given context? The dictionary is helpful for most <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-ic/-ical</em> debates, but the <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-logic/-logical</em> (and <em style="background: none; border: 0px; margin: 0px; max-height: 500000px; padding: 0px;">-logous</em>!) issue is an outlier. In such cases, consult an authoritative source.</div>

<br />
<span style="color: black;">Terminology
work is an interdisciplinary activity involving tasks from different
other fields such as informatics, linguistics, cognitive science,
documentation, knowledge management, etc… In a multilingual specialised
environment one cannot imagine providing high-quality linguistic
services without terminology work undertaken by highly skilled
terminologists. But what is a terminologist and what is their role in a
company or institution? What are the tasks of a terminologist and what
skills, competences and knowledge do they need to possess? Finally, what
training and qualification possibilities should an aspiring
terminologist have?</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">Today
terminologists working in the private industry as well as in the public
sector do not have a fixed role and could be found in different
departments of the company or institution. They can be seen in the
translation or foreign languages units, in the documentation or
information department, in the technical writing section, in the
research and development or in the public sector. Sometimes they work in
the standardisation, patents or law departments. Some of the
terminologists, and in particular in the language units, would also tend
to hold the positions of the project manager or leader of terminology
working groups.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">Analysing
all the mentioned possible working environments, we can conclude that
the tasks of a terminologist vary a lot from compiling monolingual or
multilingual terminological collections and making them available for
the users to terminology planning activities and advisory and training
activities.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">To manage all these activities there are skills, competences and knowledge a terminologist is required to possess.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">To reach the
necessary level of expertise, one must acquire one of these main
categories: qualifications obtained during terminological studies,
preparation courses or seminars, qualifications obtained by conducting
terminology work and general skills.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">The most
important requirements for a terminologist are the good knowledge of the
principles of terminology science, mastery of terminology working
methods and terminology management tools.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">A high level
of language competence of the mother tongue and of other foreign
languages and a high degree of linguistic knowledge in all languages are
also part of the most needed skills.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">Preparing a
corpus for the terminology work and the documentation of the terminology
collections is one of the terminologist´s main tasks, implying thorough
research and documentation competencies. Given the lack of awareness of
terminology despite its importance for companies and institutions, they
should also be able to give seminars or hands-on trainings on
terminology and terminological resources. That also asks for high
didactic abilities.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">On top of
all these specific requirements, terminologists should also present a
lot of general skills from systematic working methods, to sociability
and ability to work in intercultural teams, and project management. One
must possess very good IT knowledge, planning, organisational and
negotiation skills as well as a real power of persuasion.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">Due to the
changing world of technologies, the profile of the terminologist should
always be adapting to new advancements especially in the technological
field.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">For example,
with the development of the web 2.0 technologies it is very important
that the terminologist has the ability to work with these new media and
use them to provide a better and efficient terminological output.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">The
terminologist should be able to communicate through the new channels
like blogs or forums and wikis, to get involved in different
professional communities present on the web and virtually collaborate
with them.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">Due to the
high amount of information available on the web, terminologists, in
their field specialist position, should provide the terminology users
with the most reliable information available, and as a result hold the
competence of evaluating the source of the resources used for
terminology work. Through critical thinking they need to be able to
validate the quality of data they find on the web.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">To acquire
these competences and particularly the very specific ones related to
terminology science, working methods and tools, good training and
qualifications are required. Usually, in every course of studies in
translation, computer linguistics, technical writing and interpreting,
seminars on terminology are offered. In some countries there are
specific curricula with a main focus on terminology and language
technologies. Some organisations and institutes offer trainings and
continuing education courses for terminologists.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">In view of
the quick developments in all technical fields, technologies and
communication, the main requirements from terminologists are to acquire
new knowledge in a process of life-long learning and to stay all the
time up to-date.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

de la lengua española </i>(<i>DRAE</i>) admite el plural con –s de ambas
palabras: <i>vademécums </i>y <i>récords, </i>y en el <em><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Diccionario panhispánico de dudas </span></em>ofrece la
siguiente explicación sobre la formación del plural de los sustantivos <br />
<b><i>Sustantivos y adjetivos terminados en grupo consonántico.</i></b>
Procedentes todos ellos de otras lenguas, forman el plural con <i>-s </i>(salvo
aquellos que terminan ya en <i>-s,</i> que siguen la regla general: <i>gong,</i>
pl. <i>gongs;</i> <i>iceberg,</i> pl. <i>icebergs;</i> <i>récord, </i>pl. <i>récords</i>.
Se exceptúan de esta norma las voces <i>compost,</i> <i>karst,</i> <i>test,</i>
<i>trust</i> y <i>kibutz,</i> que permanecen invariables en plural, pues la
adición de una <i>-s</i> en estos casos daría lugar a una secuencia de difícil
articulación en español. También son excepción los anglicismos <i>lord</i> y <i>milord,</i>
cuyo plural asentado en español es <i>lores</i> y <i>milores,</i>
respectivamente.<br />
<em><b><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">P</span></b></em><b><i>lural de los latinismos.</i></b>
pl. <i>ratios; plus,</i> pl. <i>pluses;</i> <i>lapsus,</i> pl. <i>lapsus;</i> <i>nomenclátor,</i>
pl. <i>nomenclátores; déficit,</i> pl. <i>déficits;</i> <i>hábitat,</i> pl. <i>hábitats;</i>
<i>vademécum,</i> pl. <i>vademécums; ítem, </i>pl.<i> ítems</i>. Únicamente se
apartan hoy de esta tendencia mayoritaria los latinismos terminados en <i>-r</i>
procedentes de formas verbales, como <i>cónfer, confíteor, exequátur </i>e<i>
imprimátur,</i> cuyo plural sigue siendo invariable. También constituye una
excepción la palabra <i>álbum</i>. En general, se aconseja usar con
preferencia, cuando existan, las variantes hispanizadas de los latinismos y,
consecuentemente, también su plural; así se usará <i>armonio</i> (pl. <i>armonios</i>)
mejor que <i>armónium;</i> <i>currículo</i> (pl. <i>currículos</i>) mejor que <i>currículum;</i>
<i>podio</i> (pl. <i>podios</i>) mejor que <i>pódium</i>.
(http://buscon.rae.es/dpdI/SrvltConsulta?lema=los%20curr%C3%ADculum%20v%C3%ADtae),
los mea culpa</i>. </span>Trans&Trainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07664410876005015257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6579402127355857015.post-19296173785189439412013-05-16T02:50:00.000-07:002013-05-16T02:50:10.093-07:00Translators' Organizations<!--[if !mso]>
